Invention of Internet
The invention of the Internet started from early 1900 and matured in 1960 when first practical schematics for the Internet arrived.The invention of the internet is not work of one single person but collective cumulative efforts of geeks.computer scientists developed the concept of “packet switching,” a method for effectively transmitting electronic data that would later become one of the major building blocks of the Internet in early 1960.
The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s.Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, a communications model was developed in 1970 that set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks.
Modern Internet is the network of networks.The online world then took on a more recognizable form in 1990, when the World Wide Web was invented. The web is actually the most common means of accessing data online in the form of websites and hyperlinks.
Domain Name and IP address
In the early days of the internet, a small number of computers were hooked together with modems and telephone lines. Internet connections were possible only by giving the IP or Internet Protocol address of the computer that was to be linked.The IP address is typically like 188.8.131.52.As more and more internet connections were coming up it became difficult to remember these IP addresses to connect.Thus Domain Name System (DNS) was developed which has the capability to map to IP addresses automatically.
The Domain Name and IP address are interdependent.The IP address and domain name are therefore used to identify web pages. So, if you type into the browser either the IP address or the domain name, the system will then locate for that page and as a result, the page will be given to you automatically.
WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME? DEFINITION AND TYPES
We can define that web domain name is a sequence of letters and/or numbers/ hyphens, that act as a pointer to a unique numerical address (IP) on a computer network such as the Internet. Domain name is the address of a website
A web domain name always ends with an extension like.com,.info,.studio etc.Domain extension is the notation at the end of a web address that specifies an Internet category or a country code.
Top-level domains serve as an instant way to understand what a website is about or where it’s based.Top-level domain (TLD) refers to the last segment of a domain name or the part that follows immediately after the “dot” symbol.The example are .com (about commercial),.gov (about Government),.edu (about Education). A top-level domain of .ca in www.cbc.ca indicates something about that website, in this case, that the registrant is a Canadian organization. Responsibility for management of most top-level domains is delegated to specific organizations by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which operates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
Type of Domains
In order to further define all TLdomains, they are segregated as follows:-
1.gTLDs—Generic Top-level Domains-.com (commercia).info (information).net (network).biz (business)
2.sTLDs or rTLds—A certain type of gTLDs are called sTLDs (Sponsered Top Level Domains) or rTLDs (restricted top-level Domains) and are considered restricted because certain guidelines must be met before they can be registered:
.int (international), requires a United Nations registration number
.edu (education), Limited to educational institutions only
.mobi (mobile) adhere to mobile-compatible guidelines etc
3.ccTLDs—Countries, and territories have a top-level domain name available that’s based on the country’s two-letter codes assigned by ISO 3166-1 alpha-2
.us: United States
5.IDN ccTLD – internationalized country code top-level domains
A top-level name with a specially encoded format that allows it to be displayed in a non-Latin character set (i.e. special characters).
Further down the lane of TLDs are
SLD or 2LD—Second-level Domain
In the Domain Name System (DNS) hierarchy, a second-level domain (SLD or 2LD) is a domain that is directly below a top-level domain (TLD). For example, in dropeddomains.com. dropeddomains is the second level.THIS IS FOR DNS HIERARCHY ONLY
Third Level is directly below a second level in the DNS hierarchy.In the above example within in Dropeddomains if we want to refer to Chicago office of this company then we will have chicago.dropeddomains.com.Here Chicago is third level domain also called sub-domain.
In a different example, hotmail.com is considered a second level domain, but hotmail.com.au would be classed as a third level.
In Domain Name Registration with registrars, domain name registries introduce Second Level Domains (SLD) as .net.uk,.info.in etc.These are ccSLDs of ccTLDs.
Domain names may be formed from the set of alphanumeric ASCII characters (a-z, A-Z, 0-9), but characters are case-insensitive. In addition, the hyphen (U+002D) is permitted if it is surrounded by characters, digits or hyphens, although it is not to start or end a label
